Each year on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, we coordinate a number of volunteer opportunities for all ages. This is a great way to make this a day on instead of just a day off. We are currently planning activities for January 15, 2024. Check back for more information and planned sites. See below for previous sites we have served.

Other options have included:

Foodshare

Help deliver boxes of food to the homes of seniors in West Hartford on Thursday, January 18, 2024; volunteers will be paired with an experienced delivery person from St. James’s Church. Please contact Bill Thompson, [email protected], if you would like to volunteer.

Foodshare is an organization that works to end hunger in the overall community effort to alleviate poverty in the Greater Hartford Area.

Hartford Catholic Worker

The middle and high schoolers of St. James’s will once again participate in a day of service with The Hartford Catholic Worker. We will meet at the church to carpool down to the Green House where we will have lunch and work together with Jackie and Chris Doucot, and youth from the North End.

The Hartford Catholic Worker is a lay community of Catholics, and like minded friends, living in the north end of Hartford, working and praying for an end to violence and poverty.

Church Street Eats

Church Street Eats is a cooperative ministry providing meals and clothing to people in need. Volunteers will help sort clothing donations, and prepare and serve lunch to 100+ guests who regularly attend Church Street Eats. We'll meet at St. James's at to load clothing and toiletry donations before heading over to the Cathedral.

We collect clothing and toiletries for Church Street Eats as part of our Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service. They are most in need of the following items: New or gently used MEN's clothing (including winter coats, hats, gloves) white socks, new packages of underwear, travel-size toiletries, plastic bags and reusable shopping totes. Please bring donations to St. James's on Sundays or during the weeks leading up to the day of service.

Journey Home

A non-profit organization that leads the effort to end homelessness in the Capital region of Connecticut. We'll help move furniture and make deliveries. Volunteers will meet at the warehouse, 635 Park Avenue, West Hartford.

Community Health Center Association of CT

Volunteer at the Community Health Center Association of CT's MLK Day event at the Federation Square Apartments in West Hartford. Help seniors participate in the day's activities, including arts and crafts, bingo, and exercise class. Get to know a new neighbor right here in West Hartford, and help make this day a success!
